Gambling with Class

by Benjamine Yarbrough
Once one stares into "the blades of the money shredder” a few times (I am referring here, to the money winning machine commonly known as the Casino), one has a natural tendency to be less than “calm and collected” when re-encountering those money shredder blades. Considering this, a discussion about "Gambling with Class" may seem like a topic too far removed from most players' potential gambling reality.

None-the-less, the way we deal with our wins and losses marks us, from a class perspective, to onlookers both when we gamble here in the U.S. and even more dramatically when we gamble abroad. I believe that with adoption of a proper perspective on one's play, this reality of play can be dealt with successfully, regardless of the playing approach being used. In the process I hopefully will shed some light on how some players manage to "play on" while demonstrating an air of unruffled serenity (ie James Bond). Following are some rules which are important to starting you on the right road in your quest for gambling with Class.

Rule 1: Be thoroughly familiar with the play of the approach you intend to use. This means, not being "surprised or shocked" when you encounter those absolutely flat playing sessions which find you on the losing end. No matter how fabulous the play approach you have chosen to use, those occassional flat sessions are out there waiting for you.

Rule 2: Practice-practice-practice your play approach at a LOW Stakes level to achieve the knowledgeable viewpoint alluded to in rule 1. Do this until you are both comfortable with your new playing approach, and you feel you have seen "all sides" of what your play approach has to offer. (In the case of my Baccarat students, I ask them to play long enough to adjust their mind to the parameters of playing with an approach that wins MUCH MORE often than it loses.)

Rule 3: Don't play with money you can't afford to lose. Many people misunderstand the importance of this statement. The reason you don't risk money above your comfort level is NOT because you should expect to lose, the reason is rather that when you gamble above this level, your "Play Judgement" becomes flawed and prone to making errors.

Rule 4: Attempt to be considerate of the feelings of those you play with (if you don't, you may find that no-one wants to be around or play with a "rude dude").

Following these 4 Rules will help give you an air and attitude of confidence which, to the onlooker, is viewed as a “cool, calm, collected, and generally Classy presentation of oneself “. Again, picture James Bond.

I recently read a book by Jesse May called “The Gamblers guide to the World”, (which I recommend as a great source of information about gambling around the world). In one section of that book, I noted his lengthy comments regarding the general attitude of European gamblers. Specifically, that they exude a much classier attitude toward their gambling than do Americans. If such is the case, and I believe that it "sometimes" is, I believe that it reflects one of two things. Either the European gambler is gambling with a great deal more confidence than is the American gambler, or the European gambler is exhibiting proof of their training that it shows “Bad Form” and “Poor Upbringing” to excessively celebrate their wins or to moan, groan and belly-ache about their losses.

In the final analysis, casino gambling is not about the money. (What did he say!). It is rather, about interacting in gentlemanly fashion in an arena where decisive battles are waged, won, and lost. This focus on the “HOW one does what one does" is well worth making note of, as it is the basis of the way we communicate our class background to others without uttering even one word. The subsequent recreation of gambling approached with this mindset, is found in the doing of it, rather than simply being derived from "Winning". This attitude seems to reflect the philosophy and possibility of enjoying all aspects of one’s life, even those moments which find us removing ourselves from a mud puddle, as well as those which see us approaching the cashier’s cage with large stacks of high denomination chips.

Based on successes in other areas, and the financial boldness this promotes in tackling new challenges (like casino gambling), no group is more "IN NEED" of the insightful assistance a good coach can provide. Also, considering that most casinos seem to be lining up to take advantage of these players in one way or another, I have decided to teach them how to fight back by winning more often.
